The short answer

Spit braai is one of the few catering categories in Cape Town where operators actually publish prices, which makes it a rare chance to compare like for like. The spread is wide because the products are genuinely different: a R110 lamb spit and a R450 executive braai are not the same evening.
We re-verify this guide annually. All figures below were checked against the operators' own websites in August 2026.
What the market charges — the published evidence
Four operators publish enough detail to build a real comparison. Here is what each charges, in their own numbers.
The floor operators are honest businesses serving a volume market — if you are feeding a rugby club on a budget, they exist for a reason. The comparison that matters is what changes as you move up the tiers.
On quantities: a whole lamb feeds roughly two guests per kilogram — MySpitBraai's 18kg package serves 25–30, Beef Up's 29–30kg lamb serves 60 — so lamb weight is the honest way to sanity-check a package against your headcount. Sides, salads and breads stretch the same lamb further, which is why per-person rates at the same meat weight still vary.
- MySpitBraai: lamb spit braai from R110 per person, mixed meat from R125, weddings from R150; whole-lamb packages R3,999 (18kg, 25–30 guests) to R4,999 (22kg, 35–40 guests); extra staff R800–1,200 per staff member per event; bar service R1,000–2,000 plus beverages; travel R500–1,500 by distance.
- Mad About Spit Braai: signature lamb packages at R5,000 for 20 guests, R7,050 for 30 and R9,400 for 40 (roughly R235–250 per person); braai menus from R155 per person up to R450 for the Executive Braai; plus R15 per person in November and December, on Sundays and on public holidays.
- Beef Up Spit Braais: whole 29–30kg lamb at R8,700 feeding 60, down to a half lamb at R2,950 feeding 20; sirloin at R110 per person; chicken quarters at R50 per person.
- Spitbraai Functions: volume packages including cutlery, crockery, linen and equipment — R10,500–11,500 for 50 guests, R20,000–22,000 for 100, R28,500–31,500 for 150 (about R190–230 per person).
- Fork and Nice: gourmet spit braai at R325 per person with arrival bites, a side grazing table and a dessert table; service staff at R160 per hour, four-hour minimum.
- Why Not?! Catering: Urban Spit-Braai from R320 per person with meat, sides, salads, rolls and service included; their own market guide bands the city at R70–150 budget, R150–250 mid-range and R320-plus gourmet.
What the premium tier actually buys
The jump from R150 to R450 per person is not margin — it is a different product. At the gourmet tier the lamb is A-grade and traceable, the sides are composed rather than scooped (roasted seasonal vegetables, proper salads, artisan breads), the carving is theatre at the table, and service staff are included rather than added at R800–1,200 per head after the fact.
Mad About Food's own FAQ puts a three-course spit braai at R250–600 per person and spit-braai weddings at R300–600 — the premium band is well established. What is rare in that band is transparency: most gourmet operators quote event by event. Our spit braai catering rates are published per person, and the gourmet private braai format scales the same fire cooking down to six guests.
Two operators are worth naming for reasons beyond price: Thymekitchen in Goodwood offers a 100% money-back guarantee — the only one we found in this market — and works with halaal-friendly suppliers. Guarantees and dietary protocols are the premium tier's real differentiators, more than any cut of meat.
Service models matter as much as tiers. The market runs three: on-site (the team cooks, carves and serves at your venue — the full theatre), delivery (cooked off-site, dropped hot), and DIY hire (the spit and the lamb, you run the fire). On-site is the format that justifies the gourmet tier; delivery is the value play for office events; DIY is for hosts who want the fire as much as the food. Compare quotes within the same model — an on-site price against a delivery price is not a comparison, it is a category error.
For weddings and halaal events specifically: MySpitBraai publishes a weddings-from-R150-per-person tier, Mad About Food guides R300–600 per person for spit-braai weddings, and halaal-friendly suppliers are available across several operators including Thymekitchen. Ask for the supplier certificate rather than the assurance — the same discipline our how-to-choose-a-caterer framework applies to everything else.

What changes the price
Four levers move a spit braai quote, and all four are visible in the published evidence above.
- Guest count — per-person rates fall as headcount rises; Beef Up's whole lamb at R8,700 feeding 60 works out near R145 per person, where the half lamb feeding 20 lands near R148. The real savings come from package structures.
- Menu tier — lamb-only menus sit at the floor; mixed meat, plated sides, arrival canapés and dessert tables stack the price toward the gourmet band.
- The calendar — Mad About adds R15 per person for November, December, Sundays and public holidays; festive-week events across the market carry 1.5–2× staffing costs. Our published multipliers: public holidays 1.5×, 25 and 31 December and 1 January at 2×.
- Travel and staffing — MySpitBraai publishes travel at R500–1,500 by distance and extra staff at R800–1,200 per event; these lines are where low headline prices re-inflate.
Where we stand — our published rates
We compete only in the gourmet tier, and we say so plainly: if your budget is R150 per person, the floor operators above will serve you well and we would rather tell you that than quote against them.
Our per-person rates include the spit, the chef team, composed sides and service — the lines other operators add afterwards. Groceries are in the rate, travel is published by zone, and the festive multipliers are the same ones you just read. The figures render from the same canonical rate card as our pricing page.
