The short answer

National Braai Day falls on 24 September, Heritage Day. For 6–12 guests plan 500g of meat per person across three items, light the fire 90 minutes before serving, and prep all sides the morning of. Chef bookings for the day close two to three weeks out — it is one of the busiest braai dates of the year.

We refresh this guide every August, ahead of the September rush. The advice below is the same checklist our own braai teams run on the day.

A note on the name: the day is formally Heritage Day, a public holiday celebrating South Africa's many cultures. The braai renaming stuck because the fire is the one tradition every community genuinely shares — wood, coals and a long table.

A menu that works, by group size

For six to twelve guests, keep the grid simple: boerewors to open (it cooks fast and feeds early arrivers), lamb chops as the centrepiece, and snoek or chicken as the lighter third option. Pap and sous, a green salad and braaibroodjies cover the sides. Buy 500g of total meat per person; it sounds like too much and it is not.

For twenty to fifty guests, stop thinking in grids and start thinking in fire management. This is spit braai territory — a whole lamb turning over coals for six hours, carved to order. Our spit braai catering runs from twenty guests with per-person rates that include the carving team; below that, a private braai chef with two grids is the better format.

Vegetarian guests are not an afterthought: whole sweet potatoes in the coals, charred corn, mushroom-and-halloumi sosaties and a proper braaibroodjie station keep everyone at the same fire.

The day, hour by hour

Morning: marinate the sosaties (overnight is better), make the sous and chakalaka, assemble the braaibroodjies un-toasted, and check you have twice the wood you think you need. Hardwood — kameeldoring or rooikrans — burns longer and cleaner than softwood.

14:00 for a 15:30 first serve: light the fire. It needs 60–90 minutes to burn down to coals, and that window is when guests gather anyway. 15:30: wors on. 16:30: chops and fish. 17:30: braaibroodjies to close. The pacing is the tradition — resist compressing it.

September weather in Cape Town is spring-unpredictable. Have a covered fallback for the serving table at minimum, and position the fire where smoke drifts away from the house. Your guests will follow the fire regardless.

The shopping rule our teams live by: buy the meat two days out, marinate the night before, and buy wood a week early — hardwood sells out at every filling station and garden centre in the city in the final days before the 24th. Ice is the other item nobody buys enough of; double your estimate and you will still run low by eight o'clock.

Hand the fire over

The alternative to running the day yourself: our braai chefs take the whole fire — wood, sourcing, cooking, service and cleanup — while you host. On 24 September specifically, we book out two to three weeks ahead, so enquire in the first week of September at the latest.

Rates are published per person with a six-guest minimum, and 24 September is a public holiday, so the published 1.5× multiplier applies — it will be in your quote from the first version. Feeding a bigger crowd? Spit braai packages start at twenty guests.
