What the evening includes

A romantic private dinner for two in Cape Town starts from R3,900 per couple — chef, menu consult, shopping, a multi-course dinner cooked in your kitchen, full service and a spotless kitchen afterwards. Settings range from your villa deck to a wine-estate table to a beach-legal setup.

The package exists because a table for two has different economics than a dinner party — one chef, one evening, two guests. The from-price covers the complete experience; groceries at cost, wine, styling extras and travel outside Zone 1 are itemised on the quote, never bundled silently.

It suits anniversaries most of all, but also honeymoons, first dates that deserve a story, Valentine's week, and the quiet celebration after good news. If you are planning to propose, that is a different production — our proposal dinner page covers the covert planning that a ring requires.

Timed to the sunset, not the clock

In Cape Town the sunset is the event, and we plan backwards from it. In December the sun drops into the Atlantic just before 20:00; in midwinter it is closer to 17:45. Canapés land about an hour before sunset, the main plates as the light goes gold, and dessert arrives after dark under candles.

Setting options: your villa deck (the most popular, and the most private), a wine-estate table in Constantia or the Winelands with the vines going amber, or a beach-legal setup on the sand where permits and wind allow — we advise honestly on which beaches work and which evenings the southeaster will ruin.

Winter deserves a word of its own. From June to August the sun sets early, the Atlantic goes dramatic, and the evening moves indoors to firelight — a fireplace table for two in a Constantia home is one of the best versions of this package, and winter dates carry the best availability of the year.

The evening, hour by hour

Your chef arrives two to three hours before you sit down — you will barely notice. Canapés and a first pour at the agreed time, a short pause between courses paced to conversation rather than a kitchen's convenience, and then the best part: after dessert and coffee, the kitchen is left spotless and the chef disappears. The rest of the evening is yours, with no bill to settle and no drive home.

For anniversaries we can plate a small nod to the original — a dish from your wedding menu, a dessert from a first date — if you tell us the story in the consult. It costs nothing extra; it just takes a chef who listens.

Honeymooners should know the service works in reverse too: after a long-haul flight into Cape Town, a chef-cooked first dinner in the villa beats a reservation you are too tired to enjoy. Book the first or second night, keep it early, and let the jet lag win gracefully.

Packages and pairings, published

The couple package is the complete evening. If you would rather build à la carte, the per-person dinner-for-two rate applies, and a sommelier-led pairing can be added per person. All figures from the canonical rate card; festive multipliers (public holidays 1.5×, Dec 25/31 & Jan 1 2×) disclosed on every quote.

What changes the final number is rarely the food. It is the setting (a Winelands estate adds the Zone 2–3 travel line), the wine (pairings are per person), and the styling extras you choose. The quote separates all three, so you can tune the evening to the budget without touching the parts that matter.

Restaurant versus villa, honestly compared

A top Cape Town tasting-menu restaurant will run you a similar total once wine, transport and a booking three weeks out are counted. What it cannot do: guarantee the window table, let you eat barefoot, pace courses around your conversation, or end the evening ten steps from your own couch. What the restaurant does better: a full brigade, a deep cellar list, and someone else's load-shedding problem.

If privacy, timing and the view are the point — and for an anniversary they usually are — the villa wins. If you want the theatre of a famous dining room, book the restaurant and hire us for the night after.

The practical edges matter too. No corkage negotiation, no taxi surge at 23:00, no babysitter racing a reservation time, and no sharing the sunset with forty other tables. The trade-off is honest as well: you need a kitchen we can work in, and the menu is agreed days ahead rather than chosen at the table. For two people marking something, most couples decide the trade favours the villa by a distance.
