SEASONS & CALENDAR — GUIDE
The Festive Season Catering Guide — Ke Dezemba, Planned Properly
Cape Town in December is a city that books out. This is the planning calendar, the menu formats and the honest surcharge talk — refreshed every September.
Book festive catering by October; the 26 December – 7 January super-peak sells out earliest. Expect published multipliers — public holidays at 1.5×, and 25 December, 31 December and 1 January at 2× — on every honest quote. Menu formats: family-style feasts for villas, canapés for parties, full villa chef coverage for long stays.

We refresh this guide every September, when our own festive calendar opens. It covers the family-and-villa side of December; for the office party, see our year-end function ideas guide.
What to book when — the calendar
September: decide the shape of your December. Villa groups should lock a villa chef now — the best dates (Christmas Day lunch, New Year's Eve) are the first to go, and villa lets at R15,000–30,000 a night conclude over December, so the houses fill first and the chefs follow.
October: book everything. Catering teams, braai chefs and spit braai operators all publish their festive cut-offs, and late October is the realistic last call for super-peak dates. Mad About Spit Braai even publishes a R15 per person November–December surcharge — the market telling you, in writing, that December costs more.
November: confirm headcounts, dietary requirements and travel logistics. December: enjoy it. The group that planned in September is the one drinking MCC on the terrace while everyone else phones around.
If you are reading this in November having done none of the above: all is not lost, but the strategy changes. Flex on the date (the 23rd and 27th book easier than the 25th), flex on the format (a spit braai team covers a crowd with less lead time than a plated service), and ask every provider one question — 'what do you still have' — rather than leading with the perfect plan. December rewards the decisive.
Menu formats that work in December
Cape Town's festive table is a summer table — this is not the northern hemisphere's roast-and-gravy December, and menus that fight the season always feel wrong.
- Family-style feast — generous platters down a long table; the villa format that feeds 10–20 without formality.
- Canapés and MCC — the party format for 20-plus; our canapés reception runs from 20 guests with published per-person rates.
- The festive braai — the most Cape Town answer of all; a private braai chef for the family gathering, or a spit braai for the big one.
- Full villa chef coverage — day rates for breakfast, lunch and dinner across the stay; the seven-day bundle prices a full week.
- Christmas Day lunch — the single busiest service of the year; our dedicated guide covers it course by course.

The money talk — multipliers and budget bands
Festive surcharges are the industry norm, published by the honest operators: Cape Town Luxury Escapes charges time-and-a-half on public holidays and double time on Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day; Cape Luxury charges double on Sundays and public holidays. Ours are the same shape and published everywhere our prices appear: 1.5× on public holidays, 2× on 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
Budget bands for a December gathering of twelve: a family-style festive dinner sits in the same per-person range as our standard dinners, multiplied on public holidays; a villa chef week across the super-peak is the premium play and prices accordingly. The festive season catering page and the festive villa chef page carry the packages — both quote with multipliers already in the numbers.
One operational truth that surprises first-time December hosts: the shops shape the menu. Fishmongers and markets run shortened hours over the festive week, and the 24th and 31st are amateur hour at every grocer in the city. A chef's shopping run absorbs this — sourcing is planned around the market calendar, not discovered on Christmas morning — and it is one of the most underrated things the fee buys.
