Gourmet picnics are myCHEF's most relaxed format: a chef-built hamper packed the same afternoon, collected from us or delivered to your gate, and eaten on a Cape lawn. Priced per hamper and per person on your itemised quote — the format flexes too much for one honest from-price.
The story
Gourmet picnics are myCHEF's most relaxed format: a chef-built hamper packed the same afternoon, collected from us or delivered to your gate, and eaten on a Cape lawn. Priced per hamper and per person on your itemised quote — the format flexes too much for one honest from-price.
The spiritual home of the format is the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts, which run November to April: five thousand people on the lawn, the eastern slopes of Table Mountain behind the stage, and a picnic that should be better than a bread roll and a warm chardonnay. Ours is.
This is a seasonal page at heart — the menus rotate each October for the summer ahead, and winter hampers shift toward thermos-and-blanket territory for the Winelands weekends that still draw crowds.
Beyond Kirstenbosch, the format travels: Winelands estate lawns, villa gardens, and the quieter city parks that allow picnics. Where the lawn is yours — an estate booking or a private garden — the menu and the styling can go further, up to a full seated spread on the grass.
Three ways to picnic
Same kitchen, three occasions. Every hamper is built the day you eat it.
- 01The Concert Hamper — Kirstenbosch-ready: cold courses that travel, proper glassware, blanket-friendly packaging, timed pickup or delivery
- 02The Estate Picnic — Winelands lawns: longer menus, estate coordination handled, chilled Cap Classique packed correctly
- 03The Proposal Picnic — styled and staged: flowers, candles, a photographer on request, and the ring moment kept secret until it isn't
Inside the hamper
The food is built to survive the lawn: cured and smoked items, salads in jars that dress on the pour, breads baked that morning, cheeses at the right temperature by the time you sit down, and a dessert that doesn't collapse in the heat.
Cape produce carries the menu — stone fruit and figs through summer, local cheeses, charcuterie, and the occasional braai-adjacent item where the venue allows. Dietary hampers — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halaal-friendly with strict protocols — are built separately, never picked-clean versions of the standard.
Drinks are packed to your brief: Cap Classique, Cape wines, or a full alcohol-free spread. Estate rules on glass and alcohol vary; we check them for you before we pack.

Logistics, handled
Concert logistics are the difference between a good evening and a queue. Hampers are timed for gates-open pickup or delivered to a pre-agreed point; for estate picnics we coordinate directly with the venue on access, lawns and setup windows.
Weather is the honest risk of any picnic. If the forecast closes in, you can move the date within our published cancellation tiers, or convert the hamper to a villa spread — the food doesn't care where the blanket is.
Group hampers scale to birthdays, bachelorettes and corporate lawns; beyond twenty guests we quote it as an event with staffing rather than a stack of baskets.
Delivery windows are planned around the event, not the kitchen: concert hampers land before gates-open queues peak, estate picnics before your first tasting appointment ends. Cold chain is held with proper insulated kit — the Cap Classique arrives at temperature, not at ambient.
The season
Peak picnic runs November to April, riding the Kirstenbosch concert calendar and the long summer evenings. December to February is super-peak — book the hamper when you book the concert tickets.
Menus rotate each October for the summer ahead. Winter doesn't kill the format; it moves it — fireside estate picnics and villa spreads carry June to August for the whale-season weekends.
The October refresh is a real discipline: last summer's menu retires, the new one is built against the coming season's produce, and regulars get something new to argue about. If you picnicked with us last year, ask what's changed — the answer is usually most of it.
